OVERVIEW OF MAJOR
Are you good at organizing and analyzing information? Does the idea of calculating odds and probabilities fascinate you? Would you like to apply mathematics to everyday situations? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, then you may want to consider a major in statistics.

Statistics provides the reasoning and methods for producing and understanding data; it is the science of learning from data. It includes designing experiments or sampling surveys for the collection of data, collecting the information, evaluating it, drawing conclusions, and presenting the results. Statisticians work with people from other professional backgrounds to solve practical problems and guide them about what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. This diversity of application is an exciting aspect of the field, and is one reason for continuing strong demand for well-trained statisticians.

The curriculum includes courses that require aptitude for math and problem solving, including calculus, statistics, and computer science. Major courses focus on probability, sampling, experiment design, and data analysis.
